Dredging delayed yet again
THE dredging of the Seaway has been delayed until mid-2011, meaning boaties will have to navigate past the dangerous Gold Coast entrance to get to other ports during the busy summer season. Gold Coast City Council this week confirmed that the $3.5 million project, which was due to start before the end of the year, would now not begin until the middle of 2011 at the earliest.

Dredging plea for Labrador
LABRADOR residdents want further action to dredge the Broadwater before a serious boating accident happens. John Scrivener said besides the obvious danger, the Government could also lose millions of tourist dollars if boaties avoided the strip because of shallow water.

Reform delays put lives at risk
DELAYS in maritime safety reforms to prevent novices from getting behind the wheel of large leisure boats are putting lives in peril, industry leaders claim. A decision on boat licensing safety reforms is yet to be made, more than two years after they were proposed by the State Government agency in charge of waterways, Maritime Safety Queensland.

Give isle a break, says Susie

Cr Douglas has envisaged permanent tent sites in a camp offering a maximum of two-night stays on the island for backpacker tourists to the Coast - ideally sold through Gold Coast Tourism - to offer them an island stay close to the buzz of Surfers Paradise.

MP's comments dredge up broken Broadwater pledge
I REFER to the comments of Ms Peta-Kaye Croft (GCB, March 23) relating to dredging in the Broadwater and the marine industry base at Coomera. The marine industry on the Gold Coast is of national significance as the industry manufactures 85 per cent of recreational vessels in Australia. It is a major contributor to local, state and national economies and a major employer within the region.
